Introduction:

When and where did it happen?
It was during the summers of 2018 during my trip to France that I decided to explore its countryside on my own. Armed with just a backpack and a map, I ventured into the rural landscapes, charmed by the sprawling vineyards and quaint villages. My adventure took an unexpected turn in a small village named Bastion, nestled in the heart of Alsace. Famous for its winding streets and medieval structures, Bastion’s charm soon became a labyrinth for me.
How did you feel when you lost your way?
Initially, the experience of wandering through the cobblestone alleys was exhilarating. However, as evening approached, the realization that I had strayed far from the main path without knowing how to return turned my excitement into anxiety. My phone’s battery had died, eliminating my digital compass and map. The streets were nearly deserted, and the few locals I encountered spoke little to no English, which intensified my sense of isolation.
Feeling lost triggered a whirlwind of emotions. Initially, there was a surge of panic, followed by a sense of vulnerability. However, these feelings gradually gave way to determination. I realized that panicking would not help me find my way back. Instead, I needed to rely on basic navigation skills and the kindness of strangers.

How did you find your way out?
My breakthrough came when I entered a small bakery, drawn in by the warm glow of its lights. Using a combination of broken French, gestures, and a sketch of the town square I vaguely remembered, I communicated my predicament to the shop owner. The lady, with a smile that exuded warmth and understanding, not only provided me with directions but also insisted on giving me a freshly baked croissant for my journey back.
Following her directions carefully, I managed to retrace my steps to the town square. From there, familiar landmarks guided me back to where I had started my day’s journey. The relief and pride in navigating my way out of the situation were immense.
Reflecting on the experience, I felt a profound sense of growth. Getting lost taught me the importance of maintaining calm under pressure, the value of clear communication, and the kindness that exists in the world. It was a reminder that sometimes, getting lost is not a misstep but a path to discovering not just new places, but also new facets of oneself. This adventure, which started with a sense of dread, ended with valuable life lessons and a memorable story to tell.
