Point of view: Disagree

(All children should not be punished)

In this contemporary epoch, there is a heated argument over the issue that juvenile delinquents should be punished and treated in the same way as adult offenders. A lion’s share of the society is of the view that juveniles should be retributed in the same way as adults for their wrong conduct. However, I believe that juveniles who commit crimes are still children and should not be treated in the same way as adults. Alternatively, these youngsters are again criminals and need to be punished. However, there should be varying levels of punishment depending on the intensity of the crime.

In order to justify my point of view further, I would like to state a few points to explain my reasoning. First of all, Children are after all just children. If children below a certain age are not allowed to vote or drive or get married, then on what grounds can they be reprimanded for any mistake they do? Moreover, children do not have the ability to rationalize and do not know the difference between the right and wrong. There are numerous societal circumstances and peer pressure that define the conduct of a child. Apart from this, there are various circumstances under which a child might commit petty crimes. Hence, a child should not be retributed like an adult.

Conversely, it is also true that every juvenile crime cannot be neglected. There are some heinous crimes such as rape, murder, kidnapping and mass shootings which are commited by juveniles. These are serious offenses and some kind of retribution is necessary to refrain the offenders from repeating the crimes. Here, the judge can order deterrence, incapacitation, retribution and rehabilitation depending on the seriousness of the offense. However, these measures should only be practiced to punish serious offenders.

To conclude, not only it is true that children should not be treated in the same way as adults and punished in similar fashion. But also, they should be made to pay some kind of penalty to refrain them from inflicting harm on others in the future. Fines and warnings will suffice for petty crimes, but prison statement is necessary for serious offenses. It is necessary to check that they do not become repeated offenders.
